The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is a single-window platform for students to apply for Central Sector, State, and Ministry-specific scholarships. Whether you are applying for a pre-matric, post-matric, or merit-based scholarship, the document requirements are largely similar across schemes.

Step-by-Step Application Process
Register as a fresh applicant on the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in).
Complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC verification.
Fill in personal, academic, and bank details, and select your institute.
Browse the auto-suggested scholarship schemes you are eligible for and choose the relevant one.
Upload all required documents in the specified format and size.
Submit the application; it is then verified by your institute and, in some cases, the district or state nodal officer before final approval.
Common Mistakes That Cause Rejection
Bank Account Not DBT-Enabled
Scholarship amounts are only credited if the bank account is Aadhaar-seeded and NPCI-mapped; a regular account without this mapping causes the transfer to fail.
Institute Verification Pending
Applications remain stuck if the college or school does not verify the student's details on their institute login in time.
Expired Income Certificate
An income certificate older than the current financial year is usually rejected; a fresh certificate is required each year.
Missing Renewal
Continuing students must reapply as a "renewal" each year with the latest marksheet; skipping this stops the scholarship.
Processing Time & Fees
- NSP Application: Free.
Processing Time:
- Institute verification: 2 to 4 weeks.
- Disbursement after final approval: 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the scheme and state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for multiple scholarships at once?
Generally, a student can hold only one scholarship at a time under NSP rules, though this depends on the specific scheme guidelines.
What if my institute is not verifying my application?
Follow up with your institute's NSP nodal officer directly, since the application cannot proceed to the next stage without their verification.
Do I need to reapply every year?
Yes, most scholarships require an annual renewal application with your latest marksheet and updated documents.
Is Aadhaar mandatory for NSP?
Yes, Aadhaar-based authentication is mandatory for registration and for the DBT-based disbursement of the scholarship amount.
How do I track my scholarship status?
Log in to your NSP account and check the "Application Status" section, which shows the current stage of verification and disbursement.
